Little Red Hen bibliography -- U.S. picture book editions

Alternate site for mobile devices

The table is a working bibliography of known picture book editions of The Little Red Hen published in the United States through 2013. It is limited to single-volume and two-in-one titles (i.e., books with only one or two stories rather than collections). It excludes variants in which the hen is menaced by a fox (frequently titled The Cock, the Mouse, and the Little Red Hen). "Not seen; unverified" in an entry indicates that it has not been possible to tell if the story is a true Little Red Hen tale or the fox version.

Caveat: This is a working bibliography. Information comes from a variety of sources. Whenever possible, a physical copy of the book has been examined. In many cases, however, entries are based on more fragmentary sources: images in booksellers' ads on ebay and similar sites; read-aloud/storytime YouTube videos; WorldCat and other catalog listings. Additionally, many of the publications prior to the 1970s were inexpensive volumes subsequently reissued with modifications -- to size, covers, layout, text, and/or illustrations -- not reflected in the copyright dates or other publication information. Most of those variations are not indicated in the entries because of insufficient information.
